Social Studies
In 4th grade the students learn about Colorado. We have divided up the information about Colorado into 4 parts and each of the 4th grade teachers teaches one rotation. The students will then rotate to each teacher for a 12 day unit.

Explorer Jigsaw – (Chapter 3 – Hiking Through Colorado) -Divide class into 4 groups -Each group is assigned an explorer to research (Pike, Long, Gunnison, or Fremont) -Each person decides what they want to work on. They can be done individually, with a partner, or as a whole group.

Gold Rush! -Watch youtube videos of how to mine for gold -Fill out the types of mining page as you watch the video. Day 8 Mining Activity -Cookie Mining: Choose a type of cookie, mine it with toothpicks and papeclips, keeping track of the time, and then fill out spreadsheet to see it you made money. -The objective of the lesson is that the miners didn’t make much money. |

-Discuss territory to statehood page through chapter 11
-Keep track of how many times they tried to become a state or a territory on the board.
-Look at page 149 about Greeley
Day 10
Famous People in CO – (Chapter 12)
-Read aloud from Tails, Trails, and Tommyknockers about Baby Doe Tabor and Margret Brown (great book with a lot of really fun CO stories.)
-Read about Emily Griffith individually or as a table group.

-Finish discussing statehood and famous people
-Finish KWL Chart
-Review for Test
